UPPER WEST SIDE — A pedestrian was hit by a car near the 96th Street subway station Thursday night, shattering a car windshield and drawing a crowd of onlookers.

The injured man was taken by ambulance to St. Luke's Hospital after the collision, which took place about 10:30 p.m., according to a fire department spokesman. His injuries were not believed to be life threatening, the official said.

The accident occurred on the southbound side of Broadway and West 95th Street — a traffic area that has long concerned residents and local officials.

Assemblyman Daniel O'Donnell, who represents the area, called for the city's Department of Transportation to conduct a safety inspection near the 96th Street subway station last February after residents and a traffic officials complained that the surrounding intersections were unsafe.

The subway station, which serves the 1, 2 and 3 trains, and surrounding streets underwent a three-and-a-half year, $65 million overhaul before reopening last spring.

A car with a shattered windshield remained at the scene of the accident.
