Spelling aces from around the world will descend on Times Square this month for the Global SpellEvent — a spelling bee that features the best and the brightest from 15 nations.
Children ages 15 and under from countries including Argentina, Brazil, Chile, China and the United Arab Emirates gained entry to the championship at the Marriott Marquis in Times Square by competing in spelling bees in their home countries.
The 15 winners, who all speak English as a second language, will be sent to New York on an all-expenses-paid trip to compete against other finalists for a $10,000 scholarship.
Last year, Hyunsoo Kim won the prize by spelling the word "judicial" correctly.
This year's contestants arrive in the city on Aug. 15, take a tour of the Big Apple the next day and then compete in the championship round on Aug. 17.
Franklin Electronics, known for their electronic pocket dictionaries and translators, sponsors the Global SpellEvent, which is now in its third year.
