Inwood to Hold Healthy Carnival Saturday

By Carla Zanoni | July 15, 2011 4:37pm

INWOOD — Move over cotton candy and deep fried Twinkies, uptown families are preparing to enjoy a healthy carnival in Inwood Hill Park on Saturday.

Kids and parents are in for a day of nature walks, tennis lessons, baseball, bike riding, hula hooping and more at the second annual Vive tu Vida/Live Your Life Carnival. The free event is sponsored by Choosing Healthy & Active Lifestyles for Kids (CHALK) and the NewYork-Presbyterian Ambulatory Network, Columbia University Medical Center.

The events, which also include a tour of Inwood’s Greenmarket, healthy eating demonstrations, arts and crafts, and music, are intended to improve the health of kids and families throughout the area.

“Evidence shows that the 10 habits we promote reduce a child's risk of becoming overweight,” said Stephanie Pitsirilos Boquin, program manager for CHALK.

“Families can participate in fun, kid-friendly activities that are rooted in building healthy lifestyle habits that they can "live their life" with, either at home or by using the many resources in our neighborhood," said Pitsirilos Boquin.

Saturday, July 16, 11 a.m. to 3 p.m. at the Gaelic Field in Inwood Hill Park, near the Indian Road and 218th Street entrance.
