EAST VILLAGE — Bars aren’t the only new businesses opening on Avenue A.

The salon Joyful Nails just inked a lease to relocate from its home on East Houston Street to a 1,340-square foot storefront at 35 Avenue A between East Second and Third streets, according to Winick Realty Group.

“Their lease ran out on the other space, so they decided to move around the corner to a location that is much bigger and has great frontage,” said Winick’s Tatiana Jung, who represented the nail salon in the deal.

An employee at the current shop at 240 E. Houston St., called Top Style Nail Salon, confirmed the move and name change Thursday. The staffer could not say for certain whether the arrival of Brooklyn-based grocer Union Market, at the corner of Avenue A, forced them to find new digs.

The salon's new address, part of the NYC Housing Authority's First Houses Complex, lies on a block-long retail strip known for its empty storefronts, due in part to the fact that the city agency is restricted from renting to bars

The space used to be home to kids clothing store Sons + Daughters, and it sits across the the street from a former performance space that's become a battleground for supporters and opponents of a would-be music venue.

The salon shouldn't encounter the same controversy as the new location of the Upright Citizens Brigade comedy club a block north that was forced to remove its "Hot Chicks Room" sign in the face of community opposition.
