MANHATTAN — New York City is looking for a few good ideas.

Hoping to build on the success of its annual NYC BigApps Competition, the New York City Economic Development Corporation (NYCEDC) and the New York City Department of Information Technology and Telecommunications (DoITT) launched the NYC BigApps Ideas Challenge on Tuesday.

The annual BigApps Competition allows software developers to develop applications that use official data from the city. With the Ideas Challenge, the city is seeking ideas for applications that can run on multiple platforms. In particular, they are looking for community input.

"Consistent feedback and insight – from developers and the general public alike – is at the heart of New York City’s open government efforts,"Department of Information Technology and Telecommunications Commissioner Carole Post said in a statement.

Ideas submitted in the Ideas Challenge could be developed in the NYC BigApps 3.0 upcoming in fall of 2012.

ChallengePost CEO Brandon Kessler has said that he was glad to have people contribute "to improving the quality of life in New York."

The event runs through July 28. Selected winners are eligible to win up to $5000 in combined prize money for their ideas.

Public voting on submitted ideas will occur during the submission period, on the BigApps website.

The 25 applications with the most votes will be awarded $100 as finalist. Those finalists will be evaluated by a panel of 6 judges, where the 10 best  overall ideas will be announced on Aug. 12. Creators of those selected will receive an additional $250.

In April, the "Roadify" App won the grand prize at the NYC BigApps competition.
