KIPS BAY — A man was arrested in Kips Bay Tuesday for allegedly killing his six-month old nephew, according to police.

Luis Melendez, 33, was charged with murder, reckless assault and endangering the welfare of a child in connection to the death of baby Alex-Jose Fernandez, police said.

Alex-Jose was found unconscious Tuesday when police were called to the baby's home on 444 Second Avenue, between 25th and 26th streets, at 3 p.m.

The baby was then transported to Beth Israel Hospital but pronounced dead upon arrival.

The cause of death is yet to be determined, but a source at the medical examiner's office said shaken baby syndrome is suspected.
