INWOOD — Signaling the start of the summer season, Manhattan’s oldest canoeing club is gearing up to kick off its 2011 public paddling program next weekend.
Each year the Inwood Canoe Club, which was originally created in 1902, hosts its Sunday morning tours along the Hudson River, teaching novices how to paddle and enjoy the waterfront from its headquarters just south of the Dyckman Marina.
The group has held these sessions for more than 10 years, first introducing them in the early 2000s when its original membership of Olympians who trained in the Hudson during the 1960s began aging and membership dwindled.
Members lead participants on short tours south to the George Washington Bridge or north of Dyckman Street where they can take in the verdant scenery of the Palisades and rippling tide.
Though previously free, the club will now be charging $4 per session or $15 for an entire season in order to cover insurance for paddlers.
Residents looking to get out onto the water can join the Inwood Canoe Club from 10 a.m. until noon every Sunday through the summer, beginning on May 29.
