WASHINGTON HEIGHTS — A fire broke out in a residential building early Tuesday morning, fire officials said.

The second alarm fire started at 1 Bennett Ave., between West 181st and 184th streets, at approximately 3:02 a.m. and was extinguished approximately 40 minutes later, fire officials said.

No injuries were reported, fire officials said.

The cause of the fire is still under investigation.

The fire woke up several residents who stood outside watching flames and plumes of smoke come from the third and fourth floor windows of the six-story red brick building.

"The whole neighborhood smells of smoke," tweeted neighborhood resident shainamaidel at 3:31 a.m. with a photo of the scene on the sidewalk with her camera phone.
