GOVERNORS ISLAND — The hunt is on for a name for the castaway cat that was discovered on Governors Island last Sunday.
Elizabeth Rapuano, chief of staff for the Trust for Governors Island, is still hoping to find the cat's owners, but the Trust doesn't want her to go nameless in the meantime.
If the owners do not surface, the cat will remain on the island, which she already seems happy to call home, and keep her name.
Early contenders for the friendly calico kitty include Jetty, Isla and Sailor.
New York Magazine is also soliciting names for the stray cat online, and dozens of people have responded with suggestions. Most pay tribute to the cat's watery journey to the island, which left her matted with salt and seaweed: Pusseidon, Meowkel Phelps, Robinson Prrrrusoe and Meowracle Near the Hudson.
The voyaging cat inspired some to name her after an explorer — Purrdinand Meowgellan or Christopher Columpuss — while another commenter suggested the pun Catamaran.
"Keep the names coming!" Rapuano said in an e-mail.
