LOWER MANHATTAN — Frank Gehry celebrated his 82nd birthday Saturday night with a star-studded bash in the penthouse of his new downtown skyscraper.

The VIP guest list included U2 front man Bono and his wife Ali Hewson, actor Ben Gazzara, artists Chuck Close and Claes Oldenburg and architects Robert A.M. Stern and David Childs.

Gehry looked thrilled with his 40-inch cake, which was as shiny and curvy as the building that housed the party.

The 76-story tower on Spruce Street, called New York by Gehry, opened this month and is the tallest apartment building in the Western Hemisphere. Guests Saturday night enjoyed panoramic sunset views of the city from the irregular bay windows on the skyscraper's top floor.

The perch far above the street also provided the partygoers with a view of the largest moon in nearly 20 years.

Pictures from Gehry's party — which came a few weeks after his Feb. 28 birthday — show the architect beaming among his friends and colleagues in the first skyscraper he ever built.

Residents are just beginning to move into the lower floors of the 903-unit building, and the penthouse appeared to still be a somewhat raw space, with exposed wiring and ductwork.

Interior construction will not finish until the spring of 2012.
