UPPER WEST SIDE — Police are hunting for a trio of young robbers suspected in a string of violent muggings, including one incident where the thieves allegedly punched a 75-year-old Upper West Side man in the face while they stole $40 from him.

Police believe the three suspected robbers are responsible for six robberies and one attempted theft since early February. Five of the muggings happened on the Upper West Side, police said.

The suspects are described as being between 17 and 20 years old, five feet seven inches to five feet eight inches tall and 160 to 170 pounds.

Police say the suspects are involved in the following incidents:

One of the suspects approached a 37-year-old woman from behind on Feb. 8 as she exited an R train at the Broadway and 28th Street station about 8:45 p.m. The suspect attempted to remove the woman's purse, but ran away before he succeeded.

On Feb. 17  two of the suspects approached a 75-year-old man near 25 W. 68th Street at 8:35 p.m. The two suspects punched the man in the face and took $40 in cash from his pants pocket, according to a police report.

The victim required four stitches on a cut to his face sustained during the attack, the report said.

On March 2, the three suspects approached a 42-year-old man near 201 W. 92 Street at about 1:35 a.m. The suspects allegedly punched the man in the face, took his wallet and ran away.

A 42-year-old woman was walking near 265 Riverside Drive at about 9 a.m. on March 5 when the three suspects approached her, grabbed her cell phone from her hand and threw her to the ground.

A 24-year-old man was walking on the northbound platform of the 168 Street & Washington Heights subway station in the evening of March 7 when two of the suspects approached him, punched him in the face, took his cell phone and ran away. The victim suffered a cut to his nose.

The same day, at approximately 9:10 p.m., the three suspects approached a 27-year-old man who was walking near 310 West 98 Street. The three suspects grabbed him from behind, threw him to the ground then took his cell phone and ran away.

Last Tuesday, a 25-year-old man was walking into the 110 Street & Cathedral Parkway subway station at about 6:35 p.m. when two of the suspects approached him, punched him in the face, then took his wallet and cell phone and ran away.
