MANHATTAN — The Supreme Court refused to hear an appeal from city officials to force cab companies to buy more fuel-efficient vehicles, CBS New York reported.

Federal judges had previously ruled that city agencies could not force taxi companies to buy more fuel efficient vehicles because emmissions standards fall under federal jurisdiction, the station reported.

Officials had proposed regulating cab fuel mileage so that all 2008 taxi cabs had at least 25 miles per gallon with all 2009 cabs getting at least 30 miles per gallon, CBS reported.
