MANHATTAN — The J. Crew spinoff store, Madewell, will soon open up shop in the Flatiron District, brokers involved in the deal told Crain's New York Business.

The emerging retail chain signed a lease at 115 Fifth Ave., between 18th and 19th Streets, a former Nine West shoe store, according to the multiple reports.

Madewell was launched by J. Crew in 2006 and has its flagship store in SoHo, the parent company's website noted.

The retail chain, which offers J. Crew-style items with an American Apparel-esque twist, lists 20 locations around the country.

The new Flatiron District store opening may mark the beginning of a resurgence for the area's retail scene. Michael Kors recently signed a lease at 133 Fifth Ave., formerly a United Colors of Benetton, and sneaker chain giant New Balance will soon move in across the street at 150 Fifth Ave., according to Crain's.
