CHELSEA — Manhattan art dealer Larry Gagosian purchased a six-foot wide Andy Warhol self-portrait for $17.4 million at a Christie's auction in London on Wednesday, according to salesroom reports.
When the portrait was on view in Christie's Midtown showroom last month, the auction house said that it had not been viewed publicly for nearly 40 years — it had been in a private collection since 1974.
The monumental piece, with red hues that stretch as long as they do wide, was only expected to go for between $4.8 million and $8 million at Wednesday night's auction, but the results signficantly outdid expectations.
The total sales for the Post-War and Contemporary Art auction came in at $99.2 million.
