MANHATTAN —  First there was "The Boss" and now there may be "The Donald."

Donald Trump is interested in buying the financially troubled Mets, The New York Times reported Tuesday.

Trump reportedly called the team’s owner Fred Wilpon a couple weeks ago about buying a stake in the team.

"The Wilpons are friends of mine, and I really hope it works out great for them," Trump told The Times about the Wilpon’s trying to sell a minority share of the club. "But if anything doesn’t work out for them, I’d be interested in the team."

The Wilpons are in legal and fiscal limbo after being sued for $300 million for their dealings with Ponzi schemer Bernie Madoff.

Trump told The Times, though, that he would only be interested in a majority share in the team.

"If you look at Trump’s record, he is only interested in things he can control," he said, referring to himself in the third person.
