MANHATTAN — Manhattan fashion designer Kenneth Cole apologized for an embarrassing Twitter gaffe, which made light of the recent uprising in Cairo, Egypt.

Cole sparked outrage in the social media world Thursday when he joked over Twitter that the demonstrators in Cairo were responding to the release of his spring collection.

"Millions are in uproar in #Cairo. Rumor is they heard our new spring collection is now available online at http://bit.ly/KCairo -KC," the shoe designer, normally known for his socially-conscious messaging, wrote.

Twitter users immediately began attacking the insensitive tweet, and a parody Twitter account was created to lampoon the designer's gaffe.

Cole has since apologized for the original joke through Twitter and Facebook.

"I apologize to everyone who was offended by my insensitive tweet about the situation in Egypt. I’ve dedicated my life to raising awareness about serious social issues, and in hindsight my attempt at humor regarding a nation liberating themselves against oppression was poorly timed and absolutely inappropriate," he wrote.
