MIDTOWN — Times Square’s Hotel Carter has once again earned the dubious distinction of being named one of the country’s dirtiest hotels.

The cut-rate Carter was ranked fourth on travel website TripAdvisor’s annual list of the 10 dirtiest hotels for 2011. This is the fifth time in six years that the infamous hotel has been featured on the list, which is based on user ratings.

Reviewers on the site complained of black mold in the showers, blood on beds and rats scratching through the night. One reviewer claimed she returned to the hotel one day to find mouse droppings all over her family’s clothes.

"The rooms at this hotel are gross! They are dirty, unkempt, they reek of who knows what," user Oops1982 from Pennsylvania charged.

"The carpets were that dirty I refused to walk on the floor without shoes on - choosing to jump from bed to bed or bed to draws [sic]," another warned.

An employee at the hotel said that management was not available and declined to comment on the claims.

But some on the travel website defended the Carter, praising its central locations and bargain rates.

"Don't expect the Hilton when you're not paying for [it]," one wrote.

Also making the 2011 "ick" list were the Grand Resort Hotel in Tenn., California's Jack London Inn, the Desert Inn Resort in Daytona Beach, Fla., and the Polynesian Beach & Golf Resort in Myrtle Beach.

The Econo Lodge Newark International Airport in Elizabeth, N.J., also made the list at number 10.

Another Times Square gem, New York Inn, earned the sixth spot on the list last year.
