UPPER EAST SIDE — Philanthropists Lizzie and Jonathan Tisch donated $10 million to the Metropolitan Museum of Art's Costume Institute to help renovate the exhibition galleries and other spaces, the museum announced this week.
The renovated 4,200-square-foot gallery, which will be called the Lizzie and Jonathan Tisch Gallery, will allow visitors to view pieces from the museum's costume collection for at least 10 months of the year in a more contemporary setting.
"We are so pleased to help the Met — one of New York City’s great cultural institutions — make their unique and historic collection more accessible to its millions of visitors each year," Lizzie and Jonathan Tisch said in a statement.
"In today's world, fashion, art, and culture are becoming more intertwined, and the renovation of the Costume Institute will give this interrelationship the proper focus it deserves at the Museum. The new gallery will allow young designers and students to see and learn while advancing both art history and the art of fashion design," the donors added.
The newly designed space will include renovated gallery space, a study collection, and a conservation center for the costumes to be stored onsite.
