UPPER WEST SIDE — Times Square revelers could make history on New Year's Eve.

The New York Historical Society is holding a photo contest to collect new images of Times Square, and they're asking shutterbugs to submit photos of New Year's festivities.

The contest isn't only for the New Year's events at Times Square.

The historical society wants to collect any recent images that capture the crossroads of the world.

Submitted photos can show the exterior of Times Square buildings, billboards, group snapshots, the inside of notable buildings, and anything else that shows Times Square in the past few years.

Photos will be judged by a panel of experts and could become part of a future exhibition at the historical society. The winning photographer will receive $500 in cash. The second place prize is $250 in cash; third place is a $100 gift certificate to the New York Historical Society's gift store.

The deadline for entries is Jan. 31

Curator Marilyn Kushner said the contest is a way of documenting Times Square for future generations.

"When people donate photos to us, often times it's photos they find in grandma's attic," said Kushner. "They don't stop to think about the fact that we would love to have contemporary images of New York City, because they're not contemporary for very long. Tomorrow they become history."
