MANHATTAN — More than a dozen prison guards were injured trying to stop a Rikers Island inmate fight that broke out around 6:30 p.m. Tuesday, the Associated Press reported.

The scuffle reportedly involved six inmates awaiting pretrial hearings at the Otis Bantum Correction Center.

Thirteen corrections officers and three captains were injured stopping the melee, New York City Correction Department spokesman Steven Morello told the AP.

Morello said the injuries were not life threatening and did not know what caused the fight.
