GROUND ZERO — Mayor Michael Bloomberg slammed attorney general candidate Eric Schneiderman during a 9/11 Memorial event, saying the upper Manhattan state senator wasn't fit for the office.

Asked by a reporter about a recent report that detailed the corrupt handling of a controversial deal to build a casino at Aqueduct racetrack, Bloomberg took the opportunity to blast Schneiderman as an Albany insider.

"I don’t think Eric Schneiderman is dishonest," Bloomberg said. "But it’s hard to see how anybody who was part of the cabal that deliberately broke the rules, if the rules existed. It’s hard to see that anyone in the inside could do an honest investigation."

Schneiderman's campaign didn't respond directly to Bloomberg's remarks, issuing a statement in response that attacked Staten Island District Attorney Dan Donovan as being no corruption fighter.

The statement also touted Schneiderman's writing ethics reform legislation and his efforts to expel Hiram Monserrate from the state Senate.

Bloomberg has endorsed Donovan in the attorney general race.

"I think it is time — and I’ve said this before — to change," the mayor said.

The mayor co-hosted a fundraiser for Donovan, who is trailing in the polls, on Monday night that was attended by former mayors Ed Koch and Rudy Giuliani, former New York Governor George Pataki and New Jersey Governor Chris Christie.

The fundraised was expected to raise $1 million for Donovan's war chest, according to silive.com.
