MANHATTAN — The number of murders in East Harlem have jumped 400 percent this year, according to police statistics obtained by the New York Daily News.
There have been 10 reported murders in the 25th precinct compared to just two at the same time last year. Most recently, 17-year-old Cheyenne Baez was killed by a stray bullet at E. 128th Street on Oct. 10.
New York City's overall murder rate has increased by almost 15 percent compared to 2009, the paper reported.
The NYPD counted 437 murders in the five boroughs this year through this past weekend. That's 55 more murders after 82 were reported at this time last year, according to the paper. This figure did not include the fatal stabbing of 21-year-old Christopher Jusko in an East Village apartment building on Monday.
The 2009 murder rate in the city came in at a record low of 471, while this year's slayings are poised to exceed that.
The overall crime rate in the city has decreased by about one percent, while reported incidents with guns are up four percent. The overall crime rate also includes rape, robbery, burglary, grand larceny, felony assault, and auto theft.
