MANHATTAN — You might want to go on that shopping spree a little early.

From this Friday, Oct. 1, through March 30, 20011, the state is ending its sales tax exemption on clothing items less than $110. Shoppers can expect to pay a 4 percent tax on all clothing and footwear.

Starting March 31, 2011, the sales tax exemption will be reinstated for clothes under $55, with the full exemption being fully restored on April 1, 2012.

The clothing tax, along with an increased tax on cigarettes, is expected to raise roughly $500 million for state coffers, according to Governor Paterson.
