MANHATTAN — The Department of Buildings said Thursday that undercover city inspectors, answering ads in Craigslist, had found dozens of apartments in such bad condition that they posed an immediate hazard to tenants.

Officials have so far ordered residents to vacate 33 apartments that were found to pose dangers to residents, and have handed out over 100 fines to building owners, officials said at a Thursday press conference, according to a city government website.

The mayor's office said investigators, working undercover, had responded to 62 Craigslist ads throughout the five boroughs and found illegal living conditions in 54 of them.

Some of the apartments had untested gas lines that pose a major fire hazard, according to the mayor's office.

Of the 62 dwellings inspected, four were in Manhattan.
