MANHATTAN SUPREME COURT — A teen who was mimicking Brad Pitt's vigilante character in "Fight Club" when he tried to blow up an Upper East Side corporate coffee shop pleaded guilty to arson and weapons charges Friday.
Kyle Shaw, 19, admitted to setting off a makeshift bomb at about 3 a.m. on Memorial Day 2009, shattering the storefront windows at Starbucks at East 92nd Street and Third Avenue.
Shaw will be sentenced to 3 1/2 years in prison when he's sentenced in November, in exchange for his plea to attempted arson and weapons possession. He will also be subjected to five years supervision upon release.
Nobody was injured as a result of Shaw's antics but he faced up to 25 years in prison because of the severity of the crimes.
Manhattan District Attorney Cy Vance said the outcome of Shaw's case balances street safety with justice.
"What some sought to write off as a youthful prank had, in reality, potentially deadly consequences," Vance said in a statement.
Shaw, who lived with his parents in Chelsea at the time of his arrest, reportedly had a bedroom filled with "Fight Club" memorabilia.
He was so infatuated by the 1999 cult classic that he attended "Fight Club" inspired brawls at Pier 40, according to reports.
Shaw, his parents and his attorney, Adam Perlmutter, declined to comment after the plea was entered.
