LINCOLN CENTER — A busy day at Mercedes-Benz Fashion Week Wednesday kicked off with the modern spin on classic American sportswear at the Michael Kors runway show.

Kors’ collection was filled with khaki pieces and long sweaters, and the designer dressed his models in a variety of garments from swimsuits to trench coats. Kors threw in some color to the mix, adding hues of coral, fuchsia, and mustard to complete his spring looks.

“It was a great show, I loved it,” said Manhattan real estate mogul Donald Trump, who sat front row at the Kors show.

Trump’s wife, Melania, said that she could see herself wearing many of the pieces that she saw on the show’s runway.

Other celebrities spotted at the show include Vogue editors Anna Wintour and Grace Coddington and tennis star Serena Williams.

Following the Kors show was that of Nanette Lepore, whose collection was filled with bright colors and spring-inspired, casual looks.

Lepore's collection featured blush-colored jumpers, sequined tangerine and grapefruit-colored shirtdresses, and vintage cut swimsuits with abstract rose prints. Models were styled with low-hanging messy side buns and large hoop earrings, which added to the show's overall beachy, casual feel.

The models walked the runway to the live musical performance of rapper and former Fugees producer John Forté.

Celebrities at Nanette Lepore's show include actresses Jamie-Lynn Sigler and Kristin Chenoweth.

The afternoon continued the sportswear theme for the day with a presentation of the spring/summer 2011 collection of Adrienne Vittadini.

"We're going for dressing a woman who I think is somewhat ignored in the market, which is a working woman in her 30s, 40s, or 50s who wants clothing that's versatile, easy, and doesn't require a lot of thought," the collection's lead designer, Kristiina Salminen, told DNAinfo.

The collection featured pieces that were effortlessly elegant, yet wearable and simple to mix and match with graphic printed garments paired with simple lightweight solids. Other pieces were of blue and gray hues, for which Salminen said the inspiration was the ocean.

Following the Vittadini presentation was a runway show of almost 50 swimwear designs by Gottex.

Highly embellished and bursting with color and sparkle, virtually all of the swimsuits in the collection were cut in atypical ways, making it so very few of the pieces fit neatly into the traditional categories of bikini or one-piece.

Many of the suits were outfitted with visors of matching printed fabric as well as flowing chiffon cover ups that the designer described as kimonos or capes.
