TWO BRIDGES — A man was shot to death down the street from NYPD headquarters early Wednesday morning, police said.

The 28-year-old victim, who was not identified, was discovered by police shortly before 3 a.m. Wednesday at 46 Madison Street, down the street from One Police Plaza. The building is part of the Alfred E. Smith public housing project, according to the city's Housing Authority website.

"You think this should be a really safe place because One Police Plaza is ... there," neighbor Miriam Colden said.

Police said the man had gunshot wounds in his head, right arm and torso. He was taken to New York Downtown Hospital where he was pronounced dead, police said.

Colden, 51, lives across the courtyard from where the man was shot and said she awoke to the sound of gunshots.

"It was a lot of shots," Colden said. "I can't even count how many."

Julia Rodriguez, 57, who has lived in the Smith Houses her entire life, said there has been an increase in violent crime over the last two years.

"These projects used to be so good and now it's gotten so bad," Rodriguez lamented Wednesday morning.

Police are searching for suspects and there have been no arrests.
