UPPER WEST SIDE – A fire ripped through a building at Central Park West between 104th and 105th streets Tuesday afternoon, but there were no injuries, fire officials said.

The fire at 435 Central Park West broke out in a fifth floor apartment around noon, and quickly spread to the sixth floor, a fire department spokesman said.

Firefighters were launching a search inside the building, but there were no injuries immediately reported, officials said.

The cause of the blaze was not immediately known.

The brick building houses the Park West Montessori School, part of the Twin Parks West Montessori Schools program for infants to 5 year olds. A recorded message at the school said it was closed until September.

"The hallway was totally black with smoke," Rebecca Linden, 26, who moved into a fifth-floor apartment with her husband last week, a few doors down from where Tuesday's fire broke out. "I was really scared."
