MANHATTAN — How do you know New York's gotten too expensive? When Woody Allen can no longer afford to make movies here.

During a Tuesday press conference in Oviedo, Spain, the quintessentially New York filmmaker told reporters that he's chosen to make movies in Europe because he simply can't afford to make them in the Big Apple, the Associated Press reported.

Six of Allen's last seven films have been shot across the pond, including the one he's currently working on, "Midnight in Paris," which is being filmed in France with American actors Rachel McAdams, Adrien Brody and Owen Wilson, according to IMDB.

The Brooklyn-born filmmaker, who has averaged about a movie a year since 1965, was in Spain to promote his new film "You Will Meet a Tall Dark Stranger," which was filmed throughout the U.K. and stars actors Antonio Banderas, Josh Brolin and Anthony Hopkins. French model-turned First Lady, Carla Bruni-Sarkozy, also makes a cameo.

But Allen's European infatuation does not appear to be purely financial. The beloved "Manhattan" director, also praised Spanish actors and lamented the state of American film, saying that most of the movies made during the past decade were made for money, not art, according to CBS New York.

Allen, 74, once a fixture at Knicks games, even shot a promotional video for the Asturias region of Spain, earlier this week, the AP said.
