MIDTOWN — A brief but heavy rainstorm sent hundreds of disappointed movie watchers running for cover in Bryant Park Monday night.

About halfway through the screening of "The China Syndrome," the fifth installment in the park's summer-long annual outdoor movie series, a storm descended on Midtown, soaking the lawn in pouring rain.

About half of the crowd took off, sweeping up blankets and picnic baskets and heading for cover.

"I wanted to stay out late watching the movie, but that's not gonna happen tonight," said a disappointed Cecelia Jadoobir, 14, who had travelled in from Queens for the screening.

But Lukas Artho, 23, who is visiting from Switzerland, decided to embrace the occasion, hopping into the park's fountain for a quick swim when he realized he was drenched.
