UPPER EAST SIDE — When Payard French Bistro and Patisserie closed its doors at East 73rd Street and Lexington Avenue last summer, fans of the eatery's desserts were left with a severe case of pastry withdrawal.

Luckily for those afflicted, Francois Payard's decadent desserts have recently found a temporary home at Butterfield Market while the displaced proprietor shops around for a new location.

"The people are very pleased that they're able to find them," said Jack Sakkos, 63, manager of the market at 1114 Lexington Ave. (at the corner of E. 78th Street), of Payard's tarts, truffles and cakes.

"They've been looking for them," Sakkos said.

The Payard Patisserie has been a fixture on the Upper East Side since 1997, but a rent dispute sent owner Francoise Payard packing in 2009, the New York Times reported.

Over the past year, Payard has satisfied his clients' cravings with the counter at Butterfield, as well as a chocolate bar at the Maboussin Jewelry store on Madison Avenue between E. 63rd and E. 64th streets.

Every weekday at 11 a.m. a fresh delivery of Payard's signature Verrines, cakes and mousses arrives at Butterfield.

But the chef said he was considering a Greenwich Village location for a new bakery, the Times reported.

For now, Butterfield is happy to serve as an outlet while Payard finds a new location, and will continue selling the baker's goods once Payard opens up a shop of his own.

"Unless he opens up a store around the corner," Sakkos said of Payard.
