MIDTOWN WEST — Midtown is beefing up, with a half dozen new burger joints opening soon.

Leading the pack is the California-based build-your-own-burger phenomenon, The Counter, which will fire up its grills at West 41st Street and Broadway in the fall, a company spokeswoman confirmed.

The shop claims to offer more than 312,120 different burger combinations, with four varieties of buns and toppings ranging from Tillamook Cheddar to grilled pineapple to hard-boiled eggs.

Don't expect regular patties and buns at newcomer 4Food, which is set to open at East 40th Street and Madison Avenue on July 19.

The restaurant, whose mission is to "de-junk fast food," will serve all-natural patties that are donut-shaped, their centers filled with "ethnically diverse veggiescoops" such as hummus and salsa.

For those more in the mood for the familiar, a new Shake Shack location will be joining the ranks at the corner of West 44th Street and Eighth Avenue. The shop is set to start serving up its legendary burgers along with frozen custards and concretes in just a few short weeks, New York magazine reported.

And if that's not enough, a new Goodburger is planned for 977 Eighth Ave. near Columbus Circle and a Bill's Burger Bar location is set to open in Rockefeller Center in "late summer 2010."

But will the city lose its appetite with burger overload?

Not according Christina Wong, spokeswoman for The Counter.

"I think there's always space for great burgers," she said. "Especially in New York."
