MANHATTAN — A hearing for self-confessed Times Square bomber Faisal Shahzad will be delayed by three weeks so he can continue to talk to authorities, according to court papers released on Wednesday.

Shahzad and U.S. Magistrate Judge Theodore Katz signed off on the delay, which prosecutors argued was in the best interest of the public.

Shahzad will now appear in court on June 21.

"The granting of such a continuance best serves the ends of justice and outweighs the best interests of the public and the defendant in a speedy trial," Katz said in a statement.

Shahzad, a Pakistani-born U.S. citizen, was charged on May 4 with attempted use of weapons of mass destruction, attempted acts of terrorism, transporting explosives and attempting to destroy property with fire and explosives.

While cooperating with federal investigators for two weeks before asking for counsel, Shahzad confessed his role in the May 1 bombing attempt.
