Inwood Celebrates Its Native American Heritage at 'Drums Along the Hudson'

Northern Manhattan will celebrate its Native American roots this weekend with an old fashioned pow wow in Inwood Hill Park.

The "Drums Along the Hudson" festival includes exhibitions of world dance and varying drumming traditions alongside international and Native American crafts and cuisine.

The day will feature performances by the Thunderbird American Indian Dancers; Heyna Second Sons and Silver Cloud host Drums; Taiko (Japanese); Brazilian, Flamenco and Korean Dancers & Drummers.

The event will also honor Louis Mofsie, director of Louis Mofsie and the Thunderbird American Indian Dancers; Melky Jean, the Grammy nominated singer/song writer founder of The Carma Foundation, a Haitian women’s health nonprofit; and the multi-Grammy award winning Tom Chapin.

The event will be hosted by Sandra Bookkman, Weekend Anchor Eyewitness News ABC-TV.

Where: Inwood Hill Park
Enter the park at 218th Street and Indian Road (four blocks west of Broadway). Persons with mobility issues may experience limited accessibility in lawn areas.
