MANHATTAN — After near record-breaking highs over the weekend, New Yorkers slogged their way to work through heavy rains and soaked streets on Monday morning.

Showers and thunderstorms, which could be very heavy at times, were expected to bring a half-inch to an inch of rain to the city on Monday with a high of 82, according to meteorologists.

The heavy rain is part of a system that dumped more than 13 inches of rain on parts of the South and led to massive flooding that killed at least 15 people in Nashville, Tenn., according to the Associated Press.

New Yorkers will be treated to milder weather and a high of 78 as the rain moves out of the area on Tuesday afternoon, forecasters said.

The more moderate temperature will be a nice break from an overly warm weekend. Saturday, although pleasant, came within two degrees of breaking the record of 87 degrees set in 2001. Sunday's hot, sticky weather also climbed more than 20 degrees above the average for early May — the high of 88 in Central Park was just shy of the 90 degree record also set in 2001.

The weather is expected to climb back into the mid to upper 80s on Wednesday and Thursday before cooling down on Friday with a chance of thunderstorms and a high of 78, according to meteorologists.
