BATTERY PARK CITY— Some residents and people who work in Battery Park City might want to set their morning alarm a little earlier — their walk to and from the subway's going to get a bit longer.

Construction at Ground Zero has forced blocked off one entrance to the Liberty Street pedestrian bridge, which traverses West Street, and forced them to take a detour to a new entrance a block south on Washington Street.

The original route was a direct line from Church and Liberty streets to 1 World Financial Center.

"I was late this morning, coming in to work," said Aden Belachew, who commutes to Battery Park City from Harlem. "I had to ask several people on which way to go."

It was unclear how long the project would last. A spokesman for the Port Authority said it was committed to providing continuous access over West Street.

"I saw the construction taking place for a while, but it was still a surprise," said Jan Bowen, on her commute home, "It's out of the way, it's an extra hassle."
