MIDTOWN WEST — Robert Morgenthau has his first new job in 35 years — this time at a distinguished Manhattan law firm, the legendary former Manhattan district attorney announced Wednesday.
The 90-year-old Morgenthau made it very clear he was not going to "set up a beach chair," and take it easy at Wachtell, Lipton, Rosen and Katz, a mid-sized law firm with 225 attorneys.
In his unfurnished new office on 31st floor of the CBS building at W. 52nd Street, considerably smaller than his space at One Hogan Place, Morgenthau told reporters he was open to any assignments.
"I'm particularly interested in helping companies and individuals navigate the maze of state and federal bureaucracies," Morgenthau said. "I have always admired this firm, not only for its professionalism but for its commitment to public service."
While he declined to reveal his new salary, Morgenthau said he had several personal connections to the firm. He had been friends with Daniel Neff, partner and co-chairman of the executive committee, for more than 20 years because their children attended the Dalton School together.
Ida Van Lindt, his long-time personal assistant, who preceded his tenure at the district attorney's office, followed him to the firm.
"You think I'd come without her?" Morgenthau said.
Van Lindt was at the district attorney's office for more than 50 years, and said she has one hope for working with Morgenthau again.
"I just hope the hours are a little shorter," she said.
