MANHATTAN — Two police officers jumped into the Hudson River near the Chelsea Piers on Thursday to rescue a man who had dropped his coat in the water and fell in as he tried to retrieve it.
Eddie Morales, 29, of Brooklyn was bobbing in the frigid waves, dangerously close to the jagged remains of the old pier off W. 16th St., according to the Daily News.
"It was definitely a dangerous situation," Lt. Larry Serras of the NYPD's Emergency Services Unit, told the News.
"He couldn't lift himself out. He was hypothermic. He lost a lot of strength. He couldn't hang on anymore."
Morales had been in the water about five minutes when ESU detectives Todd Sessa and William Hart, wearing wet suits, jumped in to help him shortly before 2:30 p.m., according to the News.
"He was very happy to get out of the water," Sessa told the News.
Morales was listed in stable condition at St. Vincent's Hospital on Thursday night after he was treated for hypothermia.
