MANHATTAN — Holiday travel at JFK Airport's Delta Terminal descended into chaos as police were dispatched to control angry crowds Tuesday.

A Port Authority spokeswoman confirmed that extra officers were sent to the Delta terminal Tuesday morning.

"We did send officers to help because it's Port Authority property," said a spokesperson for authority. "We did provide security just to help."

The trouble started over a flight to Haiti, according to The New York Times.  The passengers, who had already been stuck at the airport for two days due to the weekend snowstorm, were told the flight was oversold and that they would have to wait another day.

For hours Twitter was abuzz with frustrated and angry travelers.

"Madness at the airport," user "damaneke" said in a tweet. "Jfk is a hot mess. Ppl yelling, fighting. I'm Waiting to see who throws the first punch."

Some users tagged tweets with #deltafail so it would appear Delta isn't scoring any points with passengers.

"Never flying Delta again," tweeted "myrfy." "JFK reps totally rude, never seen so many decent people cracking and exploding in anger at once."

Many tweeters grumbled over extremely long lines to make it through the terminal's security check point.

"If you are flying Delta out of JFK today expect 1.5+hours for the security line," tweeted "joelrclare."

Many travelers at JFK have been trapped in the city for days after 11 inches of snow delayed flights during one of the busiest travel times of the year.
