A federal judge said New York had more to fear from street gangs than the upcoming trial of 9/11 suspects in a speech to the American Bar Association Thursday.

Judge Royce Lamberth, who presided over the 2004 Murder Inc. gang trial, made the remarks in response to recent criticism that civiian courts would not be able to provide adequate security for suspects, such as Khalid Sheik Mohammed, who were held in Guantanamo Bay.

"The gangs are more murderous, I think, than some of these people at Guantanamo," Lamberth said in his speech, according to the Associated Press. "They've certainly killed their share of witnesses here."

During the Murder Inc. trial, in which six members were accused of killing 31 people in and around New York, Lamberth and the jury remained protected behind bulletproof glass.

The trial captivated New York with a mixture of Hip Hop, celebrity, drugs and money.
