MIDTOWN EAST — A driver in a stolen Mercedes blew through a Park Avenue red light Tuesday afternoon, narrowly missing a pedestrian, and smashing into a Lexus before the driver fled on foot, police said.

Bystander Julie Anfang was crossing westbound on Park Avenue, at 49th Street, when she heard screeching tires and saw the silver Mercedes racing toward her.

"I took two steps back, thank God, because I heard the silver car screech and was right in between them when they crashed. Debris flew everywhere and hit me," said Anfang, 21, who escaped injury.

"He must have been going at least 90 miles per hour. The two cars smashed into a 'V' right around me," she said.

The driver of the black Lexus was strapped to a backboard and rushed to the hospital for treatment after the crash.

The unidentified Mercedes driver was speeding northbound on Park Avenue when it plowed into the black Lexus crossing eastbound on 49th Street, she said.

The Mercedes was going so fast, it sent the Lexis into a tailspin before smashing into a traffic light post at the intersection, she said. The driver of the Lexus, who was not identified, was taken from his vehicle on a backboard and rushed to Lenox Hill. His condition was not released.

The driver of the stolen vehicle jumped out of the wreckage and "bolted down 49th Street," Anfang said.

Police tracked him as far as a parking garage on 48th Street between Park and Lexington Avenues, where they believed he had barricaded himself inside.

Police are still searching for the suspect.
