Downtown Docket: Improbable Suspects Charged With Medicaiid Fraud

A well-regarded artist with property in the Hamptons and a Bronx dentist were among those accused of Medicaid fraud yesterday, the Manhattan district attorney announced. There have been 11 people indicted for fraudulently obtaining health care benefits by allegedly lying about their incomes. [NYTimes.com]

John Gotti, Jr. is now befriending prosecutors, or at least hoping to. The Gotti defense team wants to call a former U.S. attorney to the stand to testify about a death threat they say Gotti received when he announced he was out of the mob in 1999. [Daily News]

About 20 newly hired lawyers in New York City whose start dates were deferred will now be doing pro bono work but will be paid $60,000 by Kaye Scholer. The 500-lawyer firm said they kept their hires because there aren't enough outside opportunities available for all deferred attorneys. [New York Law Journal]
