OLD TOWN — The end of summer — at last, it would appear — is a chance for Old Town residents to pick up some free plants.

Old Town Gardens plays host to a plant giveaway from 3-5 p.m. Wednesday between Evergreen Avenue and Goethe Street off Wells Street near Franklin Fine Arts Center. The Old Town Merchants and Residents Association reports that it's "a plant giveaway of this year's rotation of summer plants" that the garden store had tended along Wells.

According to the association, "It's first-come, first-served, so show up early to for the best selection." It warned that "you'll also need to bring your own trash bags or receptacles to carry away your plants."

But staff from Old Town Gardens, 1555 N. Wells St., will be on hand to offer advice on caring for the plants to extend their lives into the fall and beyond.

The association said that Old Town Gardens would be installing fall blooms this week along Wells.
