EDGEWATER — Eight months after making its debut in Edgewater, The Growling Rabbit is ready to take the next leap: getting a liquor license.

The  restaurant moved from Rogers Park to the former St. Andrew's Inn at 5938-40 N. Broadway earlier this year with the intention of expanding by utilizing the bar and bigger building to offer beer and cocktails, dinner and brunch pub selections.

On Sept. 15, owner Laura Soncrant applied for a liquor license that would allow the eatery to serve alcohol.

"What we want to focus on are the classics done well, the classics done right," Soncrant said. "Maybe with a little bit of a Rabbit-twist."

The application process is currently in the public-notice stage, and Soncrant said after she gets the thumbs up from the city and state, she hopes to be serving by the end of the year.

The menu is still being determined, but the restaurant will serve brunch classics like mimosas and Bloody Marys, some original cocktails, beer that ranges from national distributors to local craft brewers, a variety of top shelf and well liquors, and fortified red and white wine.

"We just want to accent the really great menu we already have," Soncrant said.
