COOK COUNTY CRIMINAL COURTHOUSE — An Englewood man who killed his brother-in-law at a June party offered the victim's son "financial compensation for the murder" via text message, prosecutors said Thursday.

Perry Coleman, 41, appeared in bond court Thursday on charges of first-degree murder in the June 4 shooting that occurred about 3:15 a.m. in the 1800 block of West Maypole Avenue.

Prosecutors allege Coleman, accomplice Albert Robinson, victim Edward Mason and several witnesses were drinking in an alley when an argument broke out shortly after 3 a.m.

Mason's son stopped the argument. But a short while later, Coleman approached Mason, 41, and asked whether he had a gun, Assistant State's Attorney Nora Gill said inside the Leighton Criminal Courthouse, 2650 S. California Ave.

When Mason told Coleman he was unarmed, prosecutors said, Coleman shot Mason once in his torso. Robinson then approached and fired multiple rounds into Mason's chest, Gill said.

Mason fell to the ground and said, "Damn cuz, you shot me, cuz," as Coleman stood over Mason and fired one more shot, according to prosecutors.

Mason, of the 4100 block of North Ravenswood Avenue, was shot 14 times in his chest, abdomen, cheeks, forearms, thigh and back, according to the Cook County Medical Examiner's Office. He died on the scene.

Sometime after the shooting, Mason's son received a text from Coleman apologizing for murdering his father and offering "financial compensation for the murder," Gill said.

When Robinson was arrested in July, he allegedly told police he shot Mason "because he was drunk." Robinson was charged with first-degree murder and denied bail.

Coleman, of the 5600 block of South Damen Avenue, was arrested on a warrant this week.

Cook County Judge Adam Bourgeois Jr. on Thursday denied Coleman bail.
