OLD TOWN — Old Town's loss is Rogers Park's gain when it comes to New York-style pizza.

The 5 Boroughs Pizza & Subs shop at 1543 N. Sedgwick St. has closed and moved to Rogers Park as New York Halal Pizza at 2262 W. Devon Ave.

"We thought it was best to give them a taste of thin crust and halal," owner Muhammad Ekram said.

The Old Town location was right across the street from the Sedgwick stop on the CTA Brown Line, but Ekram said the diverse Devon Avenue neighborhood has been even more receptive with the accompanying shift to an all-halal menu.

"We've had a good response from people, especially Muslims," Ekram said. "Halal is a new taste here."

Halal sets standards for food purity and preparation similar to kosher food, and Ekram said it's proved to be popular with Orthodox Jewish residents in the area, as well as with Pakistanis and Indians.

The restaurant remains committed to Neapolitan thin-crust pizza in the New York style.

Halal Pizza is open 11 a.m.-2 a.m. Sundays-Thursdays and stays open until 4 a.m. Fridays and Saturdays, with delivery available those hours as well.
