SOUTH SHORE — A private beach in Chicago can be had for $504,900, and it comes with a house.

There are notoriously few areas along the lakefront that are not public land in Chicago, and finding a single-family home with direct lake access is one of the rarest of all.

The one place where it does occasionally happen is in South Shore, and this week a 2,500-square-foot house at 7237 S. South Shore Drive went on the market for $504,900.

The house built in 1905 is one in a stretch of five all privately owned with their own little stretch of sandy beach between the South Shore Cultural Center and several large apartment buildings also directly on the lakefront.

The house is currently bank owned after it went into foreclosure in 2011, according to Cook County property records.

The current list price is less than half of $1.2 million the house sold for in 2007. The house was last on the market in 2009 for $1.5 million.

The four-bedroom home needs some work, and though it has no garage, it has space for three cars in the driveway.

Only five single-family homes in South Shore have direct access to the lake.

The house sold in 2007 for $1.2 million.
