DEPAUL — DePaul University put out a campus alert Sunday night after a student was mugged in an alley off Fullerton Avenue.

According to the alert, the student and a friend were approached by three people around 10 p.m. Sunday in an alley near the 900 block of West Fullerton. The suspects ordered the student to hand over his belongings, and the student passed along his wallet but refused to give up his phone.

One of the robbers then punched him in the face and ran off with the other two robbers, the alert said.

DePaul said the student refused medical treatment and declined to file a police report.

Even so, the university asked anyone with information on the crime to call Public Safety at 773-325-7777 or Chicago police at 911.

The university referred to it as a "strong-arm robbery," differing slightly from the seven armed robberies reported last week in the general DePaul area in which four suspects reportedly approached victims with a gun. One of those robberies took place about 10:30 p.m. in the 2300 block of North Halsted Street, just around the corner from the site of Sunday's mugging, and one happened about 11 p.m. in the 500 block of West Fullerton Parkway, just east of Halsted.
