CHICAGO — The Moody Bible Institute Media Lab has released a series of articles and videos on Chicago violence.

The project, "Chicago Retold," is the college's attempt to collect stories that go beyond crime stats, rumors and stereotypes to provide a glimpse into what daily life is like for residents of Chicago's most violent neighborhoods, according to professor/advisor Brian Kammerzelt.

"Several students live invested as mentors and friends to the men and women in these stories," Kammerzelt said. "More than quality reporting, what they have created is a co-telling of true experiences that together help reveal the tangled web of forces at the root of violence in Chicago.”

Articles and videos include profiles on Maria, a junior at Wells High School who rides the bus from Back of the Yards to school and the issues she faces living in a violence-plagued neighborhood. Another story is on Malik, who grew up in "K-Town" on the West Side and has just moved from a rodent-infested studio apartment into a one-bedroom with his wife.

The articles and videos were released May 1.

"This project was about listening to real people with real lives, hopes and fears — because the better we know them, the better we can love them," student Editor in Chief Brennan McCarthy said.

The Moody Media Lab, part of the school's communications program, "develops and integrates creativity through both modern and classic communications tools: photography, videography, graphic design, fine art, speech, performance, recording arts, fiction and non-fiction writing," according to its website.
