CHICAGO — One man was killed another injured after a fire in Englewood that was ruled suspicious Monday morning, officials said.
At 9:22 a.m., the two men were burned in a flash fire while in a two-story building in the 7100 block of South Emerald Avenue, Chicago Fire Cmdr. Curtis Hudson said. One of the men had burns on 80-90 percent of his body and was taken to St. Bernard Hospital before being transferred to Stroger Hospital in critical condition.
The man, who police said was about 30 years old, was pronounced dead at 9:51 a.m. Tuesday, according to the Cook County Medical Examiner's Office.
The fire burned the other man's hair and hands and he was taken to St. Bernard Hospital, Hudson said. Police said the man, who was 50, also had a cut on his left arm. He was treated and released from the hospital.
The fire was ruled "suspicious," the Fire Department wrote on Twitter.
An initial investigation suggested the fire might have been accidental, a police source said. An investigation was ongoing.
